If you grew up with the Moomintrolls just as I did, you'll probably be just as happy as I was to know that the books are not only available but still in print and you can order brand new unblemished copies. If you didn't grow up with the Moomintroll books, it's never too late to learn to love them or teach the kids in your life to do so. To the uninitiated, it's hard to explain what makes the Moomintrolls so great. Sometimes there are great adventures in their tales but often they are distinguished from other so-called children's literature by the quiet, philosophical bent of much of the text. Either way they're gems not to be missed. (NOTE: when I say "so-called children's literature" it's not because I disdain children's literature but rather that I disdain the idea that it's just for children. A Wrinkle in Time, the Moomintroll books, The Phantom Tollbooth, these are great books and they remain worth reading at any age.)Tags : Moominland Midwinter (Moomin Books) [Tove Jansson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Tove Jansson,Moominland Midwinter (Moomin Books),A & C Black (Publishers) Ltd,0713639806,Classic fiction
Moominland Midwinter Moomin Books Tove Jansson 9780713639803 Books Reviews
This book makes me feel cozy. I just want to hide in a pillow fort while reading it. It made me miss snow (protip never move to a place it never snows at, unless you're old. Snow's fun).
This book is simply FANTASTIC. I first read it when I was 8 (20+ now). It has a sense of wonder to it, that really undefinable suspension of reality where you go with the "flow". I dont want to give the story away, but every child under 10 should read this book. Adults will probably like it too. To me the this is in my top 10 books of all time. (And I read a lot). The only thing that comes close to comparing for children (in my opinion) is the short story "The Little Prince"
got this for my cousins child who is 7. I was a little concerned about how he would like it given its not well known. Per his Mom hie is thrilled and therefore I ordered a second book in the series. Its a pretty thoughtful book.

Arrived in good condition, well packed. Lovely stories in the continuing saga of the Moomintrollen. Small children will enjoy this Scandinavian children's series. Highly recommend.
Lyrical, philosophical, beautiful. I have re-read this book aloud to my boys almost every winter since the oldest was 4. This book never fails to capture the mood of winter and is a beautiful parable about accepting life as it is and not as you want it to be. What makes this book really stand out are the characters -- Moomintroll's struggle to accept winter and find his place in it, LittleMy's chaotic energy, and Too-ticky's philosophical acceptance of life as it comes, Sorry-oo's longing for the unattainable and dangerous.
While many of the earlier Moomin books (Comet in Mooninland, Moominsummer Madness) are geared squarely at children, some of the later books are more melancholy and meditative -- those are my favorites (Moominland Midwinter and Moominpapa at Sea).
One of the best books in the Moomin series. It has all the wonderful things about a children's story the wonder (Moomin has never seen snow before, and there's magic), the mystery (so many strange things and people!), a change of heart (*spoiler* he goes from hating winter and the visitors to loving it and them), danger (but never too scary), friendship (old and new), sacrifice (the jam!), and one of the best changes in character perception I've ever seen in any story, children's or adult (the character doesn't change, everyone just grows to appreciate his qualities and see them in a new light - an incredible message of being true to yourself, because a few true good friends are better than being universally popular).
