History and culture intersect perfectly in this 1950s era political thriller set in the hills of Tuscany. The images and portrayal of Italy and it's landscape and characters could only have been so perfectly captured by an author who had dedicated years of her life to living the experience. Recommended for those who are lovers of political thrillers, Italian culture &history, and 50s era period pieces.
A charming and very pleasant read. Great vacation reading or when you just need a nice story to give you a chuckle and a fun quiet time. Great literature it isn’t, but the characters are very well developed and the main plot and sub-plots are well done and cleverly interwoven.
Get the feel of post WW2 Italy and idealistic Americans in Italian politics, adventure, naivete of young marriage and sexual conflict. All good fun!
Set in Post War Italy, this book delves into a disfunctional marriage. During a time of communism, American panic, and technology innovation, the world had yet to process the war they had just been through. Lynch captures this feeling very well and makes you feel like you are there, not trusting anyone around you. A great page turner for a vacation read!
This was a fun read. I couldn't wait to get back to it each evening. Definitely not what I thought it would be, but I was drawn into the story and the characters. Would love to know what happens in their next adventure!
This book has EVERYTHING! Great story, wonderful characters. It takes you on a journey that explores relationships, politics and everything in between. The writing is elegant, non-sentimental and well, lovely. Not only did I buy the BOOK, but then I bought the AUDIBLE edition as well. Love love love it.
A fantastic book. Not just a travelogue, not just an historical novel (1956 is still history!), not just a bit of a mystery, but also a book about two people who didn't really know each other when they got married finding themselves and each other in some unconventional ways. A book about truth and lies, and about the different ways that people and communities live. A book about America and Italy, and about Americans and Italians. It will make you want to go to your closest GOOD Italian restaurant and have one of the dishes described within. It will also make you Google Siena and the places around it. Don't forget that you can see pictures on Google Maps (e.g., of the Piazza del Campo)!
